More Silly Dinosaurs
The Brief: More Silly Dinosaurs
The Critique: Does pterodactyls has feathers? I don't think so. Mine is the best. I'm a bit more talented. And I've been practicing.
Job Status: Rejected. Art director to use her own piece, below
Artist's Note: I donated the original Silly Dinosaurs to the school auction so TAD asked me to make a replacement, but I agree hers is quite good. Those are brachiosauruses, of course, but they also have blowholes like whales.
update: see the comments below - apparently TAD didn't make up those blow holes herself -- scientists did!

Brachiosaurus may very well have had its nostrils on top of its head; possibly to aid in breathing while hiding underwater from predators. Never underestimate a 'toddler' to memorize those kinds of details.
wow - well she's busted me before on biological details...
Sauropods ("longnecks") with nostrils on the top of their heads was a reasonable assumption in the past, because their nasal chambers were up there. But studies of the little passages where blood vessels and nerves go through the skull show that they had their nostrils at the front of the snout like "normal". So their noses were essentially big (probably inflatable) pouches of skin extending from the top of the head to the tip of the snout. (Here's a good example: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rIGvnkbW_PI/SvFyz8PSItI/AAAAAAAAABI/lDSOrJZHwM8/s1600-h/diplodocus01.jpg)
And sauropods living in water? That's been busted since the 1960s.
Can't really blame the TAD, though, paleontology is something that changes really fast, and most books today are outdated or simply drawn by illustrators who don't know better. The most up to date (in fact, I daresay the best) dinosaur book currently out there is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Dinosaurs-Complete-Up-Date-Encyclopedia/dp/0375824197 (But as the author notes that was published 2007, and quite a bit has changed since then: http://www.geol.umd.edu/~tholtz/dinoappendix/)
